It’s October! And all this month, NYMST brings you the best Gothic, Haunting and Scary stories. Up first, we have H. P. Lovecraft. “Pickman’s Model” and “The Picture in the House”. (image by Fellowone ) Here’s an interesting fact about the Gothic Horror genre: A common thread shared by some noted authors of early Gothic literature is their youthfulness. Mary Shelley, the mastermind behind “Frankenstein,” was just 21 when her book was published, John Keats was 24 when his Gothic fiction-infused piece “The Eve of St. Agnes” was written, and it was a 17-year-old Percy Bysshe Shelley who created the infamous demon Zastrozzi – the main character of his novel by the same name. HP Lovecraft’s early story “The Alchemist” was written when he was around 25. Lovecraft was virtually unknown during his lifetime and published only in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, but is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors of weird and horror fiction.
