This week we bring you “The Old Nurse’s Story” by Elizabeth Gaskell. Gaskell is best known for her social novels: a work of fiction in which a prevailing social problem, such as gender, race, or class prejudice, is dramatized. Though at the time, some said that she lacked the "masculinity" necessary to properly deal with social problems. Right. “North and South” is her most famous social novel and has been made into movies a few times. In any case, this story is not a social story. It’s a gothic ghost story! She wrote several ghost stories, but this one is consider her classic. It was published in Dickens’ magazine “Household Words”, so it must be good! Enjoy!
