Tolstoy was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Nobel Peace Prize. He is the only nominee to ask to have his name removed from the list of nominees.

By directly influencing Mahatma Gandhi, Tolstoy's profound influence on the nonviolent resistance movement reverberates to this day.
